In May 1993 validation stickers were introduced in Norway. They were required on both front and rear plates. At first only white and green plates with five numerals needed them, from 1998 blue plates (diplomats), too. The stickers introduced in May 1993 had the year '94' and were valid until August 1994. In 2012 it was announced that from 1 May 2012 stickers will no longer be needed. Owners may remove existing stickers if they want to. The reason given is that advances in technology have made the stickers obsolete. Colour sequence: The following images show genuine validation stickers. Actual size is 20x50 mm. The registration appears in the white field. Notice the change from using the last two digits of the year to all four. This commenced with 2000 stickers. Since 2005 stickers have a different design to accomodate a bar code containing the registration. Stickers since 2005 in the old design also exist and are used on newly registered cars with the registration in handwriting. This was also the case for newly registered cars earlier. Sometimes the registration is missing and there is simply a serial number.
When stickers were introduced, the current series of plates had been in use for 22 years. There was no place on the plate for a large sticker like the Swedish one. So they made a narrow one to be placed between the letters and numerals. The height is such that there is always enough room for the sticker above or below even if there is a screw in the middle of the plate. On new plates since December 2001 there is an embossed space for the stickers and on plastic plate a sticker box.
